Let’s be honest: in today’s online world, if you’re not dialed into how clients actually find and trust you, you’re leaving bookings (and cash) on the table. Whether you’re running a hidden gem of a salon or a buzzing beauty studio, your online presence isn’t just “important”, it’s everything.

Let’s break down the real journey your potential clients go through, from hearing your name for the first time to finally hitting that sweet, sweet “Book Now” button.

It All Starts With Attention

First thing’s first: attention is currency.

Your clients usually come from two main sources:
– Referrals
– Instagram (and the odd TikTok)

But don’t kid yourself, just because someone ticks “Instagram” on their new client form doesn’t mean one Reel sold them. Nah, it took multiple touchpoints: social stalking, website lurking, and review scrolling. Your entire online ecosystem matters.

Rule #1: Everything is connected.
Your referral program, your Instagram feed, your Google reviews, and your website all work together to turn curiosity into commitment.

The Old-School Referral Program (Still Kicks Ass)

If you think referral programs are old news, think again.
Word-of-mouth still reigns supreme.

Clients trust other clients. Period.
In our salons, we’ve had a referral system running for seven years and it’s still our number one new client generator.

Here’s what works:

  • Reward the new client (hello, welcome discount!)
  • Spoil the client who referred them (the real MVPs of your biz)

But timing is everything. Do NOT hit a client up for referrals on their first or second visit. It’s like asking someone to move in after the first date. (Too soon, mate. Too soon.)

Instead, wait until they’ve visited 5+ times, when you know they’re obsessed with you. Then, just casually weave it into the convo:

“Hey Samantha, I love having you here. We’re a hidden gem, so we mostly grow through word of mouth. If you have any friends or family who’d love us too, we’d be so grateful!”

Simple. Natural. Non-salesy.

Oh, and track your diamond clients, the ones who refer 5, 6, 7+ people. Shower them with Christmas gifts. Celebrate them. They are literally growing your business for you.

Instagram: Where Curiosity Kicks Off

Instagram is our salon’s second secret weapon (and no, it’s not dead, not even close).
Yes, TikTok is booming, and yes, we’re building our presence there too. But for now? Instagram’s still where our target market lives.

Here’s the thing though: Consistency beats virality.
I’d love a Reel to blow up with 50K views, but if it’s all people from Iceland, it’s not exactly filling my chairs in Auckland, right?

Our goal? Local, loyal followers.

Every post, every Story, every Reel is crafted with one person in mind, our salon “avatar,” Sadie.
I know everything about Sadie: what she buys, where she shops, how much she spends, what makes her stop scrolling.
Every. Single. Post. Is. For. Her.

Content rule of thumb:

  • Entertain Sadie
  • Educate Sadie
  • Inspire Sadie

Bonus: your behind-the-scenes team content outperforms hair pics every single time.
People want to feel something. They want to be part of your vibe, your squad, your secret club.

So forget chasing followers.
Focus on building belonging.

Google Reviews: Your Silent Salespeople

Let’s say Sadie’s stalking your Insta and loving the vibe. What’s next?
Google.

She’s Googling your business name, and guess what pops up? Your reviews.

Fact: 93% of customers check reviews before booking.

If you’re not stacking five-star reviews, you’re losing clients before you even meet them.

Here’s the plan:

  • Ask for reviews strategically. (Again, not after visit #1. Build the trust first.)
  • Respond to every review, even the bad ones. (Clients are watching how you handle feedback.)
  • Make it easy and incentivized. Think loyalty points, free treatments, or a cheeky discount for leaving a review.

Pro tip: More reviews = Google loving you more = Your website climbing higher in search results = More clients.

Your Website: The Make-or-Break Moment

They’ve heard about you.
They’ve stalked your Insta.
They’ve read your reviews.
Now it’s make-or-break: your website.

And trust me, this is where so many salons fall flat on their face.

Ugly websites.
Slow-loading messes.
No “Book Now” button in sight.
Service menus that sound like you need a secret decoder ring to understand.

Reality check: Your website is the only part of the internet you own.
You better make it count.

Must-haves for your site:

  • Beautiful, simple design (no one wants to read an essay to book a haircut)
  • Clear service descriptions (explain your services like you’re talking to a human, not another hairdresser)
  • A massive “BOOK NOW” button (not “submit a form”, book now. Instantly.)

We even added a 3-step process on our homepage:

  1. Check services
  2. Meet the team
  3. Book online
    No confusion. No barriers.

Your website should scream “this is easy” and feel like a natural extension of your salon vibe.

Final Word: It’s a Journey, Not a Single Click

Think of your potential clients’ journey like this:

  1. Curiosity — sparked by a referral or Instagram.
  2. Trust — built through reviews and your website.
  3. Conversion — made dead-easy by your Book Now setup.

Your socials, your referral program, your Google reviews, and your website aren’t isolated, they’re a team working overtime to turn casual browsers into loyal clients.

Small shifts create big changes.
Audit your new client journey. Tweak where needed.
And watch your bookings and your business grow.
